Google Not Indexing Your Pages? 6 Causes + Exact Fixes (2026)

Submitting to Google does not guarantee indexing. Here are the 6 real reasons pages stay out of search.

Google indexes what it trusts. If your page is not indexed, Google has a reason — and it is usually fixable.

You check Google Search Console and see your pages sitting in "Crawled — currently not indexed" or "Discovered — currently not indexed." Requesting indexing does nothing. What is happening?

Google has become significantly more selective about what it indexes. Here are the six most common reasons — and exactly what to fix.

Reason 1: Thin or Duplicate Content

This is the most common cause. Google will not index pages it considers low-quality — which means pages with: - Under 300 words of unique content - Content largely identical to other pages on your site (or copied from elsewhere) - Content that is mostly boilerplate with only minor variations

Fix: Expand thin pages to 500+ words of unique, useful content targeting a specific keyword. If pages are genuinely duplicate (e.g., filtered product pages), add canonical tags pointing to the primary version.

Reason 2: No Internal Links Pointing to the Page

"Discovered but not indexed" almost always means Google found the page in your sitemap but considers it unimportant — because nothing on your site links to it. Pages without internal links have no authority signals to justify indexing.

Fix: Add at least 3 contextual internal links to the page from related, already-indexed content. These are the strongest signal you can send that a page matters.

Reason 3: robots.txt or noindex Tags

Check two things: 1. Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt and confirm the page URL is not in a Disallow rule 2. View the page source (Ctrl+U) and search for "noindex" — if you find a robots meta tag with content="noindex", remove it

Both of these block indexing completely.

Fix: Remove the Disallow rule from robots.txt or remove the noindex meta tag. After fixing, use Google Search Console URL Inspection → Test Live URL to confirm the block is gone, then request indexing.

Reason 4: Soft 404

A soft 404 is when your server returns a 200 OK status code but the page content is essentially empty or shows a "nothing found" message. Google treats this as a dead page.

Common causes: empty search results pages, empty category pages on e-commerce sites, pages that require JavaScript to load content.

Fix: Ensure every indexed page has meaningful content visible in the initial HTML. For pages that load content via JavaScript (client-side rendering), add server-rendered content to the initial HTML payload.

Reason 5: Slow Server Response Time

If your server takes more than 2–3 seconds to respond, Googlebot may abandon the crawl before the page fully loads. Googlebot has a crawl budget, and slow pages burn it faster.

Fix: Check your TTFB (Time to First Byte) using Google PageSpeed Insights. If it is over 600ms, investigate server-side caching, database query optimization, or upgrading your hosting.

Reason 6: Page Is Too New

New pages on new domains sometimes take 3–8 weeks to be indexed, even after requesting it. Google needs to accumulate enough trust signals before committing to indexing.

Fix: Be patient, but accelerate trust-building by getting one external link to the new page from an already-indexed, authoritative page in your niche.
